While chemical companies have made billions selling us products to clean our home and yard, more and more people are turning to more natural cleaning and maintaining options. There are many natural and safe products out there that work just as well as harsh chemicals, but won't harm the environment.

When grass is healthy, it looks beautiful and it also releases oxygen and absorbs noise, so there are many good reasons to have a healthy grass lawn. However, typically people plant the wrong type of grass for their climate and soil. In order to make the grass healthy, a variety of chemicals must be added to alter the soil and prevent weeds. If you remove this grass and replace it with grass native to your area, not only will you need far fewer chemicals, you also will need less water as the grass will be more acclimated to your climate.

There are many beautiful water features that you might have in your yard, such as a fountain, a koi pond or perhaps a simple bird bath. While these are attractive, the water does need to be maintained because dirty water is harmful for wildlife and attracts unwelcome pests such as mosquitoes. Consider using a Health Ponds product to keep the water clean. Products from this company use a mix of natural, safe and effective bacteria to keep water fresh, rather than relying on any type of chemical.

You can use the Koi Pond Cleaner to remove and lessen the effect of koi pond algae, as well as keeping water clean. Each product, such as the birdbath cleaner or fountain cleaner, includes a plastic floating dispenser in which you place a pack of bacteria. This bacteria is slowly and steadily released into the water over the course of a month. The ingredients have been approved by veterinarians and are safe for humans and all wildlife.

One of the best things about going green, aside from it being a healthier choice, is that it is also usually far less expensive. You can use some natural typical items found in a grocery store and create your own cleaner mixes.

All you need is a spray bottle, tap water and vinegar to create a great streak-free window cleaner. If you dislike the scent of vinegar, you can you lemon juice and water or even club soda. To clean counters, toilets, sinks and other basic surfaces, mix a dozen drops of lavender essential oil with a dozen drops of natural soap and mix with two cups of water. You can spray this on just about any surface and it certainly won't harm anyone in your home.
